The Rock: More (9 pm)
new to the party“Staying true to its name, more supplies a fountain of unrelenting hooks and pummeling rhythms that demand attention ... creating an aggressive and accessible sound that captures both the grit and slickness of the city the band calls home.” - CMJ New Music Report

Spurred by the excitement that comes when the musicianship is just right, MORE -- singer-songwriter Tom Morrissey, guitarist Neil Mack and bassist Steve Kutch -- is (not so) quietly becoming one on NYC’s most popular underground acts. Prompted by favorable reviews of MORE’s Split the Difference EP, a blistering rock ‘n’ roll remake of Seal’s classic cut, “Crazy,” and persistent fan requests, the band recorded additional tracks - produced by Stacy O’Dell and the band and mixed by John Siket (Helmet, Ours, Dave Matthews, Sonic Youth) -- for the August release of Split the Difference as a full album.

MORE’s appeal was evident early on with a strong Internet presence including over 10,000 single downloads on mp3.com, numerous favorable reviews, and the first of three consecutive annual invitations to Canada’s largest musical festival, North by Northeast. The group’s high-energy shows also brought them attention on the local scene as the New York Post dubbed them one of “The Best Bands You Never Heard Of” (see New York Post review) within only one year of the group’s formation.

With their creative energies brimming and the impetus of the college radio campaign behind them, the group hooked up with producers Werner F (The Stills, Bob Mould) and Stacy O’Dell in early 2004 to record Split the Difference – a six-track record which includes a blistering rock ‘n’ roll remake of Seal’s classic cut, Crazy. 2004 also yielded the addition of classically trained guitarist, Steve Sabet, to further tighten more’s radio-friendly yet edgy sound. The group’s commercial appeal was embraced by international fashion company Caffeine, which marketed their newest rock ‘n’ roll clothing line around the group’s style and image, leading MORE to be featured in several issues of music and lifestyle magazines such as YRB and Complex. More closed out 2004 as one of only four finalists from over 250 bands who performed for two weeks at New York City’s top rock clubs in Guitar World Presents M.E.A.N.Y Fest 2004.

Together with several recent Starland Ballroom appearances, their second invitation to showcase at the Millennium Music Conference and another successful West Coast tour under their belt, more’ continues to live up to their reputation as “a well- packaged band ready to break out.” – All Music Guide.

The Rock: the Primms (9:45 pm)
special showcase...
Moving to New York City from the UK in the dead of winter, with little or no money, and only a few tracks laid down is not the typical route a rock band wants to start their rise from obscurity.

But it was these circumstances that provided the catalyst that fueled The PRiMMS' creative force. The one solace they found was in the hours spent together each day practicing and writing. By existing in such an isolating metropolis meant that the hardships experienced in their everyday lives poured into the very music they were creating. Those experiences coupled with their optimism and vulnerability (a seemingly English peculiarity) produces The PRiMMS' unique fusion of the hard and the soft, the ugly and the beautiful, and the familiar with the unfamiliar.

Comprised of only four members, The PRiMMS create a sound that is richer and more three-dimensional than you're your typical four-man band. The soaring vocals above the heavy yet catchy guitar riffs create a dramatic landscape of sound. Along with the thick bass lines and inventive drumming, The PRiMMS' sound comes together as beautifully melodic yet heavy and jagged.

"This new UK band did the unthinkable and moved their whole operation to NYC... Now that these four boys live in NYC, their dark and epic sound fits the city's landscape. Fans of Muse, Interpol, and early Radiohead ("The Bends") will not be able to stop listening to these early songs. So catch them now before everyone knows about our new little secret band." The Rock: Landlord (10:30 pm)
back again and better than ever....
Passionate. Reverent. Organic. Schizophrenic. Irreverent. Unconscious. Energy. Landlord is a shared experience of translating emotion into action. The band is comprised of Esfand (guitar, vox): the passionate idealist, Andres (bass, vox): the centered perfectionist, Title (drums): the calculating pragmatist. All of which translate in their music and in their live set. All of which makes up all of us. Since 2003, Landlord has successfully operated on a fundamental premise : to cut their teeth in order to share a level of honesty, inspiration, and integrity to rock music and to a generation of young people who haven’t had many bands to grow with, much like the bands that inspire Landlord. They’re electric live sets have become a fixture in popular NYC clubs.

Early 2004, found Landlord taking their sound and energy in the studio to create their self-titled debut album. They released the album out of their own pockets. Critics and fans alike were equally taken aback by Landlord’s unique sound and passionate and intense live sets describing it as U2 meets the Clash, as inner struggle meets social equality, as search for the truth meets paranoid corporate living.

The “buzz” of their debut album lead to a tidal wave of inspiration. Inspired by all of the moving pieces of popular culture and listening to swaths of Depeche Mode and Underworld, the band entered Skyline Studios in June 2005 to record their much anticipated sophomore effort. The resulting work, “Glitterati”, is slated for release in Fall 2005.

The Rock: the Izzys (11:30 pm)
tear it up for ya...

Derek Stanton: Guitar

Joe Cooney: bass/backing vocals

Tim Kuhl: drums

Mike Storey: guitar/vocals

A brilliant and mercurial thread winds through the landscape of the American songbook like a Cadillac on a lost highway. Chameleon-like, sometimes it shows itself as the high-lonesome yelp of Bill Monroe or the haunting misgivings of Robert Johnson. Other times it is the reverb-drenched bravado of a Sun rockabilly record. And sometimes it's the can't-stop- dancing boogie of any number of dance tunes by Rufus Thomas, The Mighty Hannibal, or Prince. This thread is timeless; it is the quintessence of The American Song.

The Izzys, a fully realized rock and roll outfit—cast in twang, thunder, and boogie—is driving this thread forward.

the Rock: SURFACT (from Denmark) - midnight special Special appearance!
... straight outta Denmark....
SURFACT. Coincidentally attending the same house party in Copenhagen back in the summer of 2003, Jesper, Claus and Martin met while enjoying drinks and performing freeform on an acoustic guitar. In that moment a rock band emerged. The trio added a bassist and drummer, and the first rehearsal took place. The band immediately found a way of combining their different skills into one, and rock songs that proved to be both powerful and beautiful where born. Over its brief history, SURFACT has appeared on the cover of the April issue of the Danish rock magazine "Ground Zero", debuted on national TV performing "Amber", and in 2005 launched an international tour including some of the biggest festivals in Europe. SURFACT has become a brand, not to mention a lifestyle. The artists are dedicated to the common goal of rocking hard and taking it to the top of the international rock scene.

The Rock: Fiasco (9 pm)
new to the party

\Fi*as"co\, n.; pl. Fiascoes. [It.] A complete or ridiculous failure, esp. of a musical performance, or of any pretentious undertaking.

While many shaggy-haired rock bands are beginning to flirt with the idea of making rock music that one can actually dance to, no-one combines the disco beats, funk groves, and unstoppable lyrical hooks quite like Fiasco. Drawing influences The Clash, Duran Duran, David Bowie, Chic, Grandmaster Flash, Phoenix, and Daft Punk, FiASCO's music aggressively challenges the listener to remain stationary. Blending danceable grooves with lovelorn yet impassioned, urgent lyrics, the group manage to put the fun and dance back into rock music while continuing to provide hearty lyrical and musical content.

In a short period of time FiASCO has penned a set of irresistible songs that recalls the most viscerally satisfying music of their lifetimes; Studio 54 meets CBGB's in the iconic clubs' respective heydays with a contemporary twist. To be released March 2006, FiASCO's first EP "The Girlfriend Experience" serves as both a great introduction to their jubilant, exciting sound and a portal to the infinite possibilities of their bright future.

The Rock: Xtatika (9:45 pm)
another new sound...

South Korean-born vocalist Haena Kim, inspired by her family's stories of a war-torn homeland, brought together the first incarnation of Xtatika in 1999. The result was the critically-acclaimed Korean ritual drumming battle-cry album Tongue Bath, released in 2001 on John Zorn's label Tzadik. Dozens and dozens of sweaty shows later, Haena began experimenting with her Casio synth. In the basement of a library she met up with Alabama-born beats sabatour Denim Venom and at once they started making dance beats with a flea-bitten Korg MS2000 and the sequencing program Fruity Loops. With a blatant disregard for the impossible, the duo delved into the unknown depths of sound to put together songs that are not inaccessible.

Their noir wave sound is a boiling cauldron stew of manic intensity and hyperreality, new wave cut with elements of industrial and 70s disco and rock. Energy that's intense, sweaty palpable, and a cool precision like a tripped-out dream or a sweets-inspired nightmare in the belly of the beast. Along with Montreal-expat John Chang on guitar, Xtatika puts on a seething performance that's radioactively- charged, densely explosive, and undeniably sexy.

The Rock: SecondDan (10:30 pm)
the Aussies do a special long set...

The SecondDan juggernaut is starting to take hold in Gotham City.

It has been a hectic year since Dan Rosen first left hometown, Melbourne, Australia with a bag full of songs, head full of ambition and a story to tell. Since arriving in Manhattan Second Dan are building its fanbase and reputation with its powerful live shows and songs. Their sell-out recent shows at the Irving Plaza, Mercury Lounge, Crash Mansion and Arlenes Grocery in New York demonstrate that it will not be long before this band repeats the success of its homeland here in the US.

A live sound akin to the Foo Fighters, Oasis, Radiohead, and fellow countrymen and political activists Midnight Oil. It is on the stage where SecondDan shows it true spirit - delivering a blistering live set taking their music and message straight to heart of everyone within a 50 mile radius. Music that makes you want to drink, dance and fall into lust – with a rock sound that reminds you why you love it.

Before heading over to the States, SecondDan were selected as the winners of the prestigious Unearthed by Australian alternative rock radio station Triple J – following famous alumni silverchair and Missy Higgins. SecondDan's first two singles were placed on high national rotation, with their debut EP ranking in the top independent releases of 2004.The band toured the country on festival bills with the likes of White Stripes, Black Rebel MotorCycle Club, and The Vines.

SecondDan have spent the last two months in studios in New York, Los Angeles and Melbourne working on their highly anticipated debut album. The band is currently in discussions with labels for release mid-2006.

The Rock: Fire Flies (11:30 pm)
special post Valentines surprises...

Fire Flies met and formed their groove-sparked pop band in the music department at SUNY Purchase where they are still enrolled. They recorded their first CD ("Baobabs In The Basement", hitting radio now), in their dorm room over the course of a semester. Essentially joyful and buoyant, Fire Flies upon occasion serve up their response to love and betrayal in cadences that lift and melodies that soar. Fire Flies squeak and grumble with a good-humor and unaffected innocence that despite itself engages and infects the psyche with a super modern pop sound.
