The Rock: Spitting Cobras (9 pm)

"Mullti-gendered power trio for Brooklyn. The skirt’s on bass. The dude who sings sounds like glamdelic crooner Michael Rank, which means the S. Cobras are sorta like a nervy, gear-grinding, lo-fi Snatches of Pink. Snatches of Punk, maybe. I dig this band, because they sound like the real deal, like one of those guys on the street who grabs you by the lapels and shakes you, and goes, “Don’t you GET it? The rabbit has KICKED THE BUCKET!” And then you’ll call a cop or whatever, but ten days later, sure enough, you’ll realize he was right the whole time, that the rabbit is deader than a doorknob. The Spitting Cobras have got something to say, brother, and it’s layered in cheap fuzztones and garbage can drums. “Idle Ticklin’” ain’t exactly FUN, but it’s honest, ragged, and totally sexy, in an apocalyptic sort of way.

The Rock: Superfortress (9:45 pm)

SUPERFORTRESS is the brainchild of Japanese musician NAO. On the streets Tokyo's Shibuya district Nao spent his teenage years searching for instruments/records and inhaling everything that the brilliant area had to offer. It was at the age of 18 that Nao moved to the equally artistic Lower East Side of New York City, where he holed himself up in a co-op on Ave C and pieced together his Superfortress.

With a healthy obsession for vintage Formula 1 racing and computer programming Nao's music began to take the shape of a slick, and shiny machine. The music of Superfortress can be easily traced back to 80's new wave of pop heroes like Duran Duran, David Bowie, Berlin and The Human League. It is the addition of Drum n' Bass beats and Sax lines from Sam Kawa (DJ Krush) that moves the music of Superfortress forward a few centuries, creating Nao's dream, the musical equivalent of a vintage Formula 1 racer, old yet modern.

LIVE MEMBERS Nao - vocal/guitar/sequencer Lisa Novella - Bass Bett Thompson - Drums/Break beats

The Rock: New London Fire (10:30 pm)

There's a shimmering spark in a snowstorm. Every few beats, it escapes suffocation by a opportune breath and defiantly perseveres until it becomes a glow. From the glow, a white globe of heat. New Jersey's New London Fire became an inferno from a few stray incendiary components blowing in the same direction. Fighting against an uncompromising climate, members David and Jason Debiak, Rich Polatchek, and Jonathan Lam decided to team their creative efforts after years of individual musical endeavors.

The Debiak brothers had spent six toilsome years as members of Sleep Station touring with an unstable roster in a tour van on its deathbed. The stress, in tandem with the regular tornadoes and violent drunks, was more than a few kids from the quiet North Jersey hills could endure. Dave and Jason persisted in creating solid and beloved underground indie records such as "Hang in there Charlie" and "After The War". No matter how many shows were played or records released, luck always seemed to be just beyond reach.

During many of these tempestuous touring spells, childhood friend and "multi-instrumentalist", Rich Polatchek, had been Sleep Station's fill-in drummer. Rich as been playing music his entire life in one capacity or another. As precocious 12 year olds, Rich and Jason used to watch Dave rehearse in his garage - with Dave's permission of course. Ironic that 10 years later, Rich would become the full time drummer in NLF. Jazz trained and proficient in a handful of instruments, Rich has recently been lending his talents on trumpet to other bands, including Eyeball label mates Kiss Kiss.

Soon after Rich's inception, guitarist Jonathan Lam, also of New Jersey, was introduced to the Debiak brothers by Rich during the formation of NLF. Prior to joining the band and building the distinctive wall of sound heard on "I Sing the Body Holographic", Jonathan spent a lot of time after college traveling to Europe and Asia. Spending so much time teaching and practicing turned out to be fortunate for the rest of the band when they found themselves endowed with a "refreshingly brilliant" guitar player.

In Spring 2005, when all four members finally met and recorded the album, the chemistry was undeniable. With the help of producer D. James Goodwin, the band created an album which all of the members felt lived up to their potential. If a young, angsty Michael Jackson produced a Cars song everyday for three weeks, you might get a hint of NLF's elegant urgency. The band's gushing melodies are fused with terse and somber samples to create an aural blueprint of a lustrous distinction. New London Fire's debut album of flawless electro pop consonance, "I Sing the Body Holographic", is to be released in early 2006.

The Rock: Seems So Bright (11:15 pm)

We live in Brooklyn, where we met and put this thing together. We write pop songs - though hopefully not of a typical fashion. We have no desire to appear as or become puppets. We believe in the concept of one by one. Resistance is our first recorded EP. As it was completed in the first month of becoming organized, you might notice some differences with our live show and our newer songs. We think that is more than ok and continue to use it as an introduction to tell people about us.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Rock: Valeze (12 Midnight)

Valeze may be up-and-coming, but they aren’t coming quietly!

Rising to the top of the New York music scene with their hot shows and hotter frontwoman, Valeze has created more than another band. They’ve created a rock party.

Valeze’s provocative shows are pumped full of raw energy. With a whirlwind of melodically crashing songs, they command the stage with fierce guitar riffs and the wicked vocals of the flirtatious and classically trained Tiffany V. Building on their influences from the seminal bands of the late Seventies-Blondie, the Clash and the Sex Pistols in particular-Valeze has cultivated a sound all their own. Live, the sexy Tiff may be the focal point, but the Valeze experience wouldn’t be complete without the infectious energy of AC Delco (guitar), Joe H (bass), Tim Grace (keys)and Miles Kennedy (drums). Dressed to the nines in their matching suits and tiny ties, these guys instill fervor into each and every performance.

Valeze is more than a hot New York band. They have nabbed the attention of corporate sponsors (Sam Ash, Panasonic, Mountain Dew, Garnier Fructis, and more) and when they’re not thrilling Manhattanites, they’re roaring across North America. From L.A. to Philly, Detroit to Toronto, Valeze is guaranteed to light up the night and wake up the neighbors.

Valeze is putting the finishing touches on their killer debut record for release in the Spring of 2006. Look out for an advance of this coming soon, plus check out Valeze’s sultry music video for their cover of the Stooges song “Search and Destroy.”

“Valeze has got their feet firmly planted in Blondie’s footsteps. Fronted by classically-trained Tiffany Randol, this band (with their frenetic breakdowns and breathy vocals) will take you right back to Studio 54!” — NY Press.

Thanks to everyone last week who helped us raise money for Snow Day. On January 27th, Snow Day will be taking 30 5th graders from the Sisulu-Walker Children's Charter School in Harlem on a one day ski trip to Mountain Creek. The ski trip will give the opportunity for the children to learn about a new sport that builds confidence, courage, and inspires them to excel. We raised hundreds of dollars and the money will pay for the bus to pick the children up from their school in the morning, and drop them off back at the school that night. It will also cover their lift tickets, and their equipment rentals.

Thanks for all your help!

The Rock: Moi? (9 pm)

something new for the '06 kickoff

"The theatrical and comedic Moi? swings a mighty shtick. Their over-the-top rock numbers come off like collaboration between every 80's hair-metal band and Shudder to Think. And as funny as most of these songs are, they are also seriously catchy and highly danceable."

-the Village Voice

Moi? consists of former members of legendary NYC bands such as Double Dong & Wyld Lyxx and Muckafurgason. In addition, members of Moi? have played with Moby, Perry Ferrel, John Flansberg (They Might Be Giants), Corn Mo, Vitamin C, the Wau Wau Sisters and Princess Superstar. Several members of Moi? have also appeared on and off Broadway in Rent, People Are Wrong!, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Circus By the Sea, and The Losers’ Lounge.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Rock: "Wyld Stallyns" (9:45 pm)
San Dimas High School Football Rules!

"The winners of the historic San Dimas Battle of the Bands, Wyld Stallyns are responsible for bringing forth world peace, aligning the planets, and basically making the future as non-heinous as possible, all thanks to their most excellent music (and adventures)."

Excellent!
