The Rock: the Yards (9 pm)

“The Yards are Pittsburgh’s first instantly signable rock band of the new millennium…”
~Pittsburgh Post Gazette

Los Angeles, CA (June 20, 2005) – After appearances on The Carson Daly Show and FUSE TV, The Yards hit the road on an East Coast summer tour this July. Leaving their devoted fans in Pittsburgh, The Yards venture out on a two-week tour from Washington, DC to Buffalo, NY where they will perform songs from their self-titled debut album.

The Yards stand out amongst today's slew of garage and Indie rock bands with their bold, fresh sounding songs and in-your-face energy. This Pittsburgh four-some has independently released two locally acclaimed albums in as many years. The Yards edgy-yet-fun vibe comes from great band chemistry, solid musicianship, and four individuals with a flair for playing live. As front man Camden Leeds puts it, "We don't just stand around and play songs--we really pour it out and people love that." Leeds and guitarist Chris Lohr are the creative team behind the band's tunes. Lohr started playing guitar and bass at age 8, and likewise Leeds was playing multiple instruments by age 10 while "running around the house making up songs". Their early collaborations in 2002 brought songwriter Leeds to the table with melodies and lyrics, while guitarist-turned-producer Lohr helped to refine and develop them into well-crafted songs. Soon Leeds' gritty, catchy tunes reminded Lohr of his love of great guitar-driven rock, and the two deepened their partnership by forming The Yards.

The band's musical influences, while varied, have a common thread: intense, emotional, raw energy. While Lohr names Stone Temple Pilots as his greatest influence, Leeds remembers being deeply affected as a child by Handel's Messiah. Leeds explanation captures what many of the band's fans would say about their live shows: "I just love music that makes me react!" Look for their new album out this Summer.

The Rock: Overnight (9:45 pm) ”For such a young band, their songs have already solidified to a level that surpasses many touring bands I have seen this year… Watch out for this band to start making waves in 2005.” – The Tripwire 12.04

Winter 2003: Philip Watts (Gliss) came to a realization--He’s sick of Los Angeles. After finishing a handful of 60’s inspired recordings, he quit his crappy job, all the bands he was in, packed up the '85 Dodge van, and headed east. He called a friend in Jersey City, Gregg Leto (Rye Coalition) and the two set out on a quest for the right players to complete the group. Dozens of prospective players came and went before discovering John Majer (Lazycain), and Ben Davidson (Black Cat Revolver). The four had instant chemistry and began writing together the very first night they played. A name was chosen and OVERNIGHT was born. After playing numerous gigs around NYC it was time to record. OVERNIGHT recorded and produced the soon to be released E.P. Beat The Drum Till The Follow.

The Rock: the Choke (10:30 pm)

The Choke is:

Cameron:vox
Jonny:drums
Josh:Bass
Eric:Guitar

Jayson Diamond sayz:
THE CHOKE are one of the great new bands kicking around NYC.Sorta like Wendy O. with more soul singing on a Bomp! records release in the early 80's

We say:
60's girl group and motown, filtered through the attack of garage rock and anthemic punk 'n' roll.

The Rock: Looker (11:15 pm)

“At this stage in the game--one of the things we least expect is a disarmingly simple, cool band like Looker. The quartet covers the basics well: Sing-along harmonies… tight guitar-led melodies—Looker would have been right at home on a bill with Salem 66 in the mid-80’s.” Time Out New York

LOOKER, one of the top new New York City bands of the moment, play dark-edged, unforgettable pop songs. Often compared to The Ramones, Sleater-Kinney, and the Libertines, LOOKER combines the delicious harmonies of 60's surf rock with the unmistakable grit and speed of old-school punk, to produce indie pop-rock that is at once melodic, danceable, dirty, and catchy as hell. LOOKER was originally formed in May 2003 by longtime friends Boshra AlSaadi and Nicole Greco, whose collaboration is characterized by two distinct yet complimentary musical (and vocal) styles that converge in their punk, pop and literary influenced songwriting. In August 2003, the band was completed with the addition of Portland native Rachel Smith on bass and Rich Smalley on drums.

LOOKER is slated to go into the studio this August with heavyweight producer Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, Raveonettes, Richard Hell) to record an EP’s worth of material.

With packed shows at top NYC clubs, great press, radio play, and performances with The Raveonettes, Communiqué, Benzos, the 22’s and Joy Zipper under their belt, the band is preparing to get their show on the road to a larger audience. A US & UK tour is in the works for the fall.

The Rock: Via Violenta (9 pm)
Via Violenta draws on the sounds and styles of the metropolis; vague and sinister, raw and precious. Based out of Brooklyn Via Violenta is infected with influences ranging from Blonde Redhead to Tom Waits, Their haunting melodies of daunting marionettes invoke Elliot Smith and Sparklehorse, while their dissonance and deconstruction reminisce At The Drive-In, Fugazi, and Charles Mingus. Theirs is the way of the poet and the vagrant, the city and the saint; the beauty and the violence.

The Rock: Pure Dream Ladder (9:45 pm)
Pure Dream Ladder is coming off an amazing 2004/early 2005 playing in front of over 2,000 people at the world famous venue, Shepherds Bush Empire in London, England. The band has been hard at work in 2005 playing shows in the US and Europe and they finally land home in New York City to play there first hometown performance of 2005. "We couldn't be happier to be playing Between A Rock and A Hard Place as our first New York show for 2005," stated Chris Mezera, the band's lead singer. "It was our home for all of 2004 in the city and we hope to continue to play it many more times in the future."

PDL completed their first self released record in early 2005 and has sold out of it's initial pressing. PDL's music is produced by the band along with legendary rock-soundscaper Bryce Goggin (Pavement / Spacehog / Evan Dando/ The Ramones) The band released their first EP in the summer of 2003 which has sold over 4,000 copies.

They have been likened by some critics to, “..Travis, The Doves, Foo Fighters and Coldplay to name a few, notwithstanding the occasional Spiritualized nod…” Trying to describe their style isn't easy, because their sound is very much their own.

In short: Pure Dream Ladder is finally getting the recognition they deserve, both from fans the world over and music industry alike, and luckily at a time when the band is more prepared then ever to make the most it.

The Rock: Like Yesterday (10:30 pm)
Like Yesterday emerges from the New York City indie rock scene with unique vocals and a guitar-driven soundscape. The band recently completed the North-East leg of Taking Back Sunday's Fall 2004 tour, and more recently played sold-out shows with The Used, My Chemical Romance, Coheed and Cambria, Midtown, Starting Line and Head Automatica which solidified Like Yesterday's strong and growing fan base.

Like Yesterday's music is driven by emotion and provokes a visceral response from listeners. They emphasize, "We want people to understand that we live this music." It is their honesty, both bitter and sweet, that connects the band to their audience. Mark Holmes, the singer, explains, "This band is about having the courage to deal with life's most vulnerable moments, and then to actually share those experiences in an intimate way with our audience." Like Yesterday hits their mark drawing in listeners with passion that is unadulterated and genuinely inspiring.

The Rock: Maggie Kim (11:15 pm)
Maggie Kim is . . .

A. A shameless exhibitionist
B. Recently celibate
C. A megalomaniacal control freak
D. A singer/songwriter/bassist/producer/rockstar
E. An attention whore
F. All of the above and more

You might think the answer is F, but that’s only because it’s more interesting to be all of those things than just one of them, right? Except maybe B. And A and E are essentially the same thing, aren’t they? Plus, what’s the “more” they’re talking about here? The Rock: Morning Theft (9 pm)

.morning theft. is a New York City band, but doesn't like to say so. Instead of getting clumped into the same genre of a seemingly endless line of bands paying homage to 80's new wave synth sounds, Morning Theft is determined to be THE band of the New York City scene without conforming or compromising their sound. Drawing from their collective influences, which range from Pixies to Radiohead to Fugazi to Nirvana to Nine Inch Nails to Muse to Sunny Day Real Estate, the band constructs a sound unique unto themselves. Of course, every band says that and would like to feel they are something special. Morning Theft are more than that. Their energetic live shows are a display of intensity not seen in the city, nevermind most clubs around the U.S. The band, formed in 2004, already has a self-released CD, an EP release and a U.S. tour under their belt and are looking to do whatever it takes to become one of the best and well-respected bands.

The Rock: J and members of the Cloud Room (stripped down set!) (9:45 pm)

J and other members of the Cloud Room will be joining us for a unique, stripped down set... don't miss this one.

The Cloud Room's awesome press:
"...hand clapping beats and a melody that the Kaiser Chiefs would give their last "ahaaaaa" for is no mean feat."
- NME

"In the race to be the next big thing, The Cloud Room is about to give Bloc Party and The Dears a run for their money."
- PopMatters

"NYC buzz band the Cloud Room has a winner with this euphoric song, which has a perfect summer singalong chorus and recalls the glammery glittery goodness of Ziggy-era Bowie. - Salon.com (on "Hey Now Now")

"[Hey Now Now] is a genuinely brilliant single, up there with the Killers' "Mr. Brightside," the Kaiser Chiefs' "I Predict A Riot" and the Decemberists' "16 Military Wives" as one of the great alterna-pop singles of the first half of 2005."
- All Music Guide

"Catchy." - National Public Radio, "All Songs Considered"

"[Hey Now Now's] fit-for-iPod-commercial groove thankfully isn't the only thing working in the band's favor."
- CMJ

The Rock: the Rats (10:30 pm)

Since June 2004, Dirty Excuse has been playing loud .........Here come The RATS with rock’n’roll that’ll
chew your ears off......

- Ratti Kaiser, NoStatusQuo Magazine.............“A glaring sheen of young urban cynicism glues their set together like the triple-black paint on a (Chevy) Nova SS, with ear-worm hits like “Dump You”, “She’s a Choker” and “Let’s Keep It Superficial”. A cup of Damned or Dolls, a drizzle of Dead Boys and even a sprinkle of Spinal Tap!” .

Like their namesakes, the RATS' instinct for adaptation, humor and survival is present in every riff, rhythm, and rhyme. Crawling out of the rathole, onto the world’s toughest music scene, New York City, the RATS have appeared at DON HILL’s, the CONTINENTAL and LIT and they ain’t crawling back in until the City and the whole world gets their message.............the RATS RULE!!

The RATS were formed in 2005 and are:

Lefty Bones - Lead Guitar, Vocals (Gibson Guitars & Vintage Marshall Amps)

Jake Stark - Lead Vocals, Bass (Fender Bass, Ampeg Vintage amps)

Jakey Snakes - Drums, Vocals (Sonor Drums, Zildjian )

*** Featuring Lower Manhattan's punk celeb Dj Jasper, on turntables

the Rock: Dirty Rainbow (11:15 pm)

Clouds opened and rain poured for days. Locked in a tiny shanty for weeks with nothing to survive on but stale cigarettes and cheap whiskey, the soon to form Dirty Rainbow spun endless rotations of scratched motown and R&B records with intermissions of revolution rock a la MC5 and the Stooges. The sun finally burned through the atmosphere which led to the exodus that Jeremy, Mitch, Rashmi and Sterling soon embarked on. Finding a retired collection of bordeline unusable instruments at an auction populated with gear from dead blues men and women, their fate was decided. It took mere days for the group to reincarcerate themselves in an abadoned loft in New Orleans, where the group drank and played for weeks and months until their heavy psychedelic blues brand of rock could no longer be contained in such a place. Locals were out for blood looking to collect on the band's debt that was the product of their ability to get even the most cheap barkeep to extend their tabs far beyond any reasonable amount. Collecting their gear in haste, the newly christened Dirty Rainbow made their trek to New York City. The city was bright and cold but it harbored no contempt for them. Hiding out deep in the L.E.S., Dirty Rainbow continue to record and evolve...

The Rock: My Victoria (12 Midnight)

Alternately sweet, sexy and dirty, My Victoria thrashes out sounds from a diverse background of influences—post-punk, new-wave, psychedelic surf—that coalesce into pure rock and roll. The angular bass lines, two-note chords, and the occasional stunning drum solo create a cohesive, infectious mix that's putting My Victoria on the lips of the city's indie rockers. After 5 months in the studio, the band just released their 6-song debut EP Out, Loud, All Around. Completely self-produced, mixed, mastered and packaged, it models after the group’s raw, DIY aesthetics. Possibly the best sex you will ever have with your ears.
