The Rock: Persona (from Philly) (9:00 pm)
This band has been a local favorite of Philadelphia's dockside shanties for several years. After a brief and unsuccessful stint in northern Romania, they've returned to their bread and butter of providing the Philadelphia area with the kind of swagger only it could appreciate... Persona has no desire to reinvent a genre of music or rehash a given decade, they just want to make the gals swoon and the boys fume.

The Rock: the Last (9:45 pm)
The gods of metal took a Sunday drive, and this was in their 8-track player. New York's The Last features five friends/musicians -- Mike, Sergio and Gregg (formerly of New Jersey band Run Like Hell), Mark (formerly of Brooklyn's Tear Us Apart) and Pete (from Out of Nowhere) -- who gathered in Pete's basement in mid-2004 to write and record some new songs... They turned out dark, melodic, complicated, but also humorous, hopeful and twisted. And they're a hell of a lot of fun to experience live.

The Rock: Monuments (10:30 pm)
Monuments is a Brooklyn-based rock trio that links tight grooves and catchy rock riffs with unusual time signatures and melodic, high-pitched vocals. The songs range from topics about predictable character types, relationships and dreams to anti-depressants and fears about the world coming apart at the seams. About two years ago, Gab (guitarist/singer) and Mike (drummer) met through a mutual musician friend and clicked immediately working out songs together for about 6 months.Mike later recruited an old band-mate Dan (bass) who he grew up with in Westport, CT. Monuments is in the final stages of mixing their EP, to be completed in March. Fans have compared them to My Bloody Valentine and Neil Young.
More on the band....

The Rock: Mistakes (11:15)
MISTAKES will destroy everything. Loud, furious and unapologetic, the Brooklyn based quintet known for its danceable rhythms and quirky pop sensibilities are ready to explode. Based on an ethic where every wrong can be a right, MISTAKES are music. Combining their progressive tendencies and cynical outlook into a tight unit, the end result is an experimental pop style. With influences including The Clash, The Kinks and coked out Bowie, the music surrounds itself in a wall of sarcasm, paranoia and arrogance. MISTAKES are inevitable. They will make noise until implosion. MISTAKES destroy everything.

The Rock: Daisy Ricochet - after midnight
Daisy Ricochet was originally based on the ideas of Neil Cabana. A singer/songwriter/producer from NYC who became uninterested in pursuing the typical solo career and resurrected the "will to rock" with a real band. With influences across the map including The Pixies to Swervedriver to Brian Eno, he began bringing forth his ideas to respected friend and musical colleage Matt Prine (DR's other guitar player), with just minor outlines, Matt assisted Neil in his vision of the album "Need" in the summer of 2003. Throughout the completion of the record in 2004, they played with a number of different temporary members to finally find their signature rhythm section consisting of Brett Sharbaugh(bass) from Baltimore, MD, and Carlo David (drums) of NYC.

The Rock: Soma (9 pm)
Combining elements of pop songwriting, British post-punk, shoegazer, IDM, and classic funk, and soul, Soma's music is a rush of lush, expansive instrumentation and passionate vocals with melody pushed to the forefront. Reverb-drenched guitars, grooved-based rhythms, and expressive vocals make up the expansive Soma sound. The band's eclectic sound can partly be attributed to the members' diverse backgrounds - musically and geographically. Singer Skye Nicolas was born and raised in the Philippines and moved to NYC after some time in Seattle and LA; guitarist Eric Zuehlke moved around extensively growing up, moving from Michigan to Switzerland, to Hong Kong, to Thailand and back to the US; bassist Jeremy Foti hails from Atlanta and after stints in various bands in the area, decided to move to NYC; and drummer Mike Weyhing, originally from Grosse Point, Michigan, moved to NYC to study jazz drumming at the New School.

Soma's sound and personality exude confidence, transcendence and passion. In a climate of disaffection, irony, and regurgitation of old styles, Soma stand apart from passing fads and novelty. These are songs for the masses and not just for those in "the scene". They distill the timeless essence of classic rock n' roll and pop sensibility and inject it with a personality and melodic sound of their own, making music that is deeply rooted in influences ranging from the 60s through the 90s yet sounding completely fresh, vibrant, and vital

The Rock: the Charms (from Boston) (9:45 pm) Boston's The Charms are clearly a band on the rise. With a recent one-month residency at Somerville's Abbey Lounge--and various other gigs aplenty--the band has risen to a high level of visibility around Boston in short order. Out front in the mix are vocalist Ellie Vee's melodic vocals and the scorching lead guitarwork of Joe Wizda. The band combines an innate sense of pop accessibility with crunchy hard rock in a form not dissimilar to one of their newer influences, Cheap Trick.

If that's not enough to peak your interest, how about the fact that they've got KISS's blood-n-fire spitting mogul Gene Simmons all in a lather over their infectious music, too. And yet the band also has a garagey side to their sound that recalls the late-'70s hey day of Boston's music scene exemplified by the Real Kids, the Classic Ruins and the Lyres. Russian import Kat Kina pounds the Farfisa keys like a female Monoman, while bassist Pete Stone and drummer Dennis Burke keep things rock solid. We've brought the band down from Boston to strut their stuff...

The Rock: Bona Roba (10:30 pm)
Bona Roba's Stones-like garage sound has us bringing them back again and again to work their magic... This will be their 3rd venue for playing Between - the first band ever to hit that number...

Bona Roba was started Summer '01 in Queens, New York. The band was a short-lived three piece, made up of Sesso, Nicholas Delladonna + LaFanta. At the start of '02, Abbracciamento joined the band. In February '04, Delladonna left the band and moved to Italy to manage a winery. Soon after, Luc Carl left his family business, DiCarlo's Quality Meats, and became drummer. Three of the four members speak fluent Italian. Luc Carl is taking lessons.

The Rock: the Great Shakes (11:15 pm)
Call The Great Shakes political punk prostitutes and they smirk, “Call up the zealots for a fundamental time.” Stand still, staring, arms X’d across your chest, and they groove, “Distortions in the truth, we give it to you.” Laugh, cry, scream at them, and they remind you that they “know you’re never faithful” and they “know they’ve had enough.” The Great Shakes didn’t start out this self-assured, these five distinct people who know Americana is more than the isolated island culture of the 5 boroughs of NYC.

The Great Shakes started out disillusioned and lucky. Their first single, WANT/GOT, somehow found its way onto commercial radio rotation and propelled their independent, internet-distributed debut EP (The United Shakes of America) to several top 100 lists of 2003. However the momentum soon came to a slow dance halt. Two drummers, one guitarist, much more airplay, a tour of LA, a notorious $12 bed-jumping video, a lot of shows, a few broken toes, and a year and a half later, they finally signed a development deal with Joe Blaneyy. Joe was part of the making of the pop clang of Combat Rock, the groove of Prince’s Lovesexy, the post disco-punk of NYC icons The Bush Tetras and the pulp garage of The Ravonettes new record.

The Great Shakes new EP Americana Bebop (Rich & Sexy, Inc. CD003) should be released in early Spring of 2005.“We do not have a past. We only have a presence.”

The Rock: Plumerai (from Boston) (9 pm)
Plumerai has become a keepsake of sounds & inspirations of a musical history shared by brothers Martin & James Newman. Drawing from their love of 80's postpunk, 90's shoegaze and triphop, the two collaborated to create their own vision of bliss and melancholy. Entering a quaint basement studio outside of Boston the brothers forged a make-believe band with Martin handling the role of guitarist & keyboardist, and James taking on the bass and drums. The voice of Plumerai was later found in a feisty blonde named Kathryn Zmrlik. The three along with their engineer toiled for months in the makeshift studio to create a souvenir of all their efforts. By year's end the three fleshed out a real band and played a run of successful shows in preparation for their debut release on Get Nice Records.A new year has found Plumerai with a new lineup. The pixie-like redhead Kerry Leva now stands where once was a blonde. Also an old band mate, Jorge Martinez, has taken the duties of bassist. With the CD release fast approaching, Plumerai is taking their show on the road.

The Rock: the Head Set (9:45 pm)
The Head Set are post pop and brit rock fused with what you might hear echoing out of a garage in Brooklyn, if there were garages in Brooklyn. They turn a different corner when other bands right now are going the way of disco rock and give us a new NY indie rock sound. Something different but something we are familiar with. A sound we love, taken to another level." -GothamistThe Head Set are currently finishing up their latest EP with Richard Lloyd of Television. Check www.TheHeadSet.com for updates regarding its release.

The Rock: Heroes in the Seaweed (10:30 pm)
Heroes in the Seaweed is a Brooklyn-based five-piece consisting of two surly vocalists and their acoustic crooning over swells of ambient electric guitar, drops of percussive rain, and the weeping hum of a lonely cello. Over the past year, their moody, folk-influenced indie rock has been conducted into the perfect soundtrack to accompany a gray summer storm.

The Rock: the Rinse (11:15 pm)
The Rinse plays rock’n’roll dance music, at turns flamboyant and dark, summed up by a friend as “Bowie on Broadway backed by Blur.” Their mission is to rock so hard that listeners will forget to worry about just what their deal is.

Between (a Rock and a Hard Place) is New York Underbelly's live rock party - now at our new venue, Crash Mansion, 199 Bowery at Spring.
