The Rock: Diamonds (9 pm)
Diamonds don't use enough drugs for a group of people who call
themselves a hard rock band. And their music is stricken with an
undercurrent of try-anything optimism that may come of as naive for
professional musicians. But wait a minute, they're not
professionals, they're amateurs. Or are they?
Rob: Aries, Vagins Dentata, Former Guitar Player for The Swirlies,
Tour Manager and Recording Engineer. Professional enough it would
appear. Tim: Catholic School, Nice Family, Sex Offender, Drums.
Morgan: Vocals, Leo, Metal, Karma, Tantric Sex. Seth: Navy Man,
Carpenter, Easy Going, Mysterious, Consummate Professional.
There's something in the background of their music that reminds me
of that Royal Trux song Junky Nurse. But you can't lump them or
deconstruct them. You got to get to know them and the amorphous
ambisexuality that they drag around with them like loose change. The
music is totally their own and totally new. It is perhaps akin to
the disconcerting newness of a first date, but keep in mind a few
words by the Diamonds themselves, "If she looks good, the girl's
attractive."
Diamonds is flattered by comparisons to Thin Lizzy, Rush, and even
Rick Springfield. But the "girl's best friends" from Long Island
City are not concerned with rewriting the pages of AOR history, only
with rocking the nylons off the ladies in the crowd.
The Rock: Morgan Ave. (9:45 pm)
Morgan Ave is an original modern blues-folk-rock act with a sound
comparable to Stone Temple Pilots with bluesy Natalie Merchant-like
vocals. All age groups can relate to the themes and expressive
lyrics, which run through their music. Raw female fronted
blues-rock... Morgan Ave is based in New York City. Having shared
the stage with Ryan Adams and Jesse Malin, Morgan Ave is currently
gearing up for a Spring U.S. college tour with lead singer
Carolina’s "MTV Hits" castmate Dorian Davis, Lollapalooza alumni
Tripside and Warped Tour band Insofar. Their music will be featured
on Kron Studios’ MUSIC FROM THE INVISIBLE SKY compilation CD
available in October and they make live cameos in the films
“Shooting Livien,” starring Ally Sheedy and Dominic Monaghan and “13
Going on 30” starring Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo both to be
released in Summer 2004.
"Morgan Avenue describes itself as “an original modern classic rock
band,” which translates to new stuff that sounds like good-ol'
rock-and-roll."
- New London Day
The Rock: The Alphamales (10:30 pm)
Appearing on the NYC rock scene in early 2002, the Alphamales have
seen a steady rise toward recognition throughout the past year and a
half. Take one part 60’s garage, one part punk, and divide it by all
those bands that grew up from the fragments of Pussy Galore, and
you’ll end up with something like the Alphamales. a swirl of guitars
and a driving rhythm section, topped off by a frontman with a voice
oft-compared to richard hell flanked by two guitar slinging
alpha-females yields a five piece not scared to have a good time,
take a gamble, toss out a cover, or write a song in an hour before
going on stage.
After a maiden voyage at a nondescript show at NYC’s infamous
Continental, within weeks the Alphamales found themselves playing
stages like Brownies, CBGB’s, Maxwells and the Mercury Lounge.
November 2002 found them holed up at the Funhouse in New York City
with Jerry Teel (Boss Hog, The Chrome Cranks, and The Knoxville
Girls) with production assistance from band guru, Bob Bert, to bring
their debut ep Morally Casual to the masses.
In the time between recording and the release of Morally Causal,
they’ve shared bills with The Lilys, Thee Shams (Telstar), LoHi
(Tigerstyle), Pete Ingo (Moshi Moshi - UK) and most recently had the
honor of opening for garage legends Sky Saxon and the Seeds.
Says BBGun, “The alphamales are the only band in the history of rock
that is proud to be from Jersey City, NJ, even printing it on their
T’s. . . .The AM’s are a 3 guitar, bass and drums punk slam that get
better every show. any band that has a song called ‘The Bob Bert
Strut’ and occasionally, whip out a version of Pussy Galore’s ‘Fuck
You, Man’ has to rule.”

The Rock: Blue Collar (9 pm)
Blue Collar is a five piece renegade punk band from Philadelphia's north east. Guitarist Nick Passio built Blue Collar with Brian Hannon (guitar) and Joe Altomari (drums). Later, Den Kilfeather (bass) joined with long time friend Vinny Green bringing the microphone. "We just started playing and
there it was" says Nick.
Over the years, Blue Collar has never attempted to write a particular style. "Various styles appear in all our songs with each style becoming part of the band's musical aura" says Blue
Collar drummer Joe Altomari, who will also likely mention, he and his mates are giving rise to a new revolution!
So join our global ascendancy; and in the words of singer Vinny Green, "if you're having half as much fun as we are, we're still having twice as much fun as you!"
The Rock: Kilgore Trout (9:45 pm)
Shades of pop, earth tones of punk, a rock hard backbone and lyrics you can sing along with. Mix it all up and it smells like Kilgore Trout. "We are making music that is intelligent,
accessible and unpretentious. Yeah we like to entertain ourselves with a clever chord change and a dropped D, but making people jump up and down is really the goal of it all, isn't it? We channel our influences through various rock filters and come up with a sound that is at once a bit this and that, and upon further review is undeniably altogether our own." Kilgore Trout takes the edge of village punk and smashes it into an emo-pop
polished mold.
The Rock: 10 Heads High (10:30 pm)
Synergy: A common accord that bonds, an agreement between all parties involved, a fellowship of friends working towards an ultimate goal bridging a union of creativity, talent and enthusiasm. 10 Heads High is not your typical rock band - the fusion that exists between each member of 10 Heads High facilitates a sound that is new, distinct and cutting edge. At the same time, the band has recreated a sound from the past and has given us a new version to reckon with, one with consistency, on the edge, and full of rock & roll flavor that we all will grow to love.
Tommy Kohl, guitarist, Marc Lombardo, lead singer,Brian King, drummer, and Michael Borenstein, bass player blend a variety of influences into their music, and 10 Heads High has also managed to attract attention of local rock radio stations that have requested their participation in their concert productions. The band has also won several unsigned artist contests which have allowed them to open shows for bands like Cheap Trick, Quiet
Riot, the Exies, Enuff Z’nuff and Theory of a Deadman.
(It’s all in the name. 10 Heads High was derived from a VH1 program that showcased modeling agencies and their models. During the program, one model agency spokesperson referred to their models as being “ten heads high,” in other words the best of the best.)
The Rock: Lola Ray (11:15 pm)
"When I first heard I Don't Know You, I couldn't believe how great it was. I just can't imagine anyone hearing it and not wanting to put it out—it's that good."
- Benji Madden, Good Charlotte/D.C. Flag Records
Long before serendipity stage-dived into Lola Ray and a platinum-selling band signed them to their new label, John Balicanta, Brian Spina, and James McIvor were just a bunch of
seventh graders hanging out in the O.C. They attended St. Margaret's, a parochial school in the small missionary town of San Juan Capistrano, California. Brian moved from Northern
California, John had lived in Saudi Arabia, and James relocated from his native U.K. The three spent too much time loitering at Disneyland, throwing crap at the lunch lady ("mammoth hunting"), and replacing their prohibited piercings with clear fishing line. More than anything else, however, they obsessed over music. The trio soon formed a band - and then went to different colleges. Meanwhile, three thousand miles due northeast, in Syracuse, New York, Alex Smolinski, similarly fanatical about music, was taking it out on the drums.
Cut to New York City, where John and Alex met while pursuing their music separately, and the two immediately clicked. But unable to find a bassist or guitarist, John flew back to
California to see his former band. “We were fans of what John was doing right away," says Brian who was working lights at the infamous Troubador. "Once we heard the music we knew we had to move East."
Thus Lola Ray (a combination of Lola Corin and Lolo Ray) was born. They first crashed on Peter's floor while rehearsing. Soon they were playing with bands that would come to include the Sounds, Jet, and Flickerstick. The band fully intended to spend the next several years touring, promoting and recording until they found success. No one expected a break to come as soon as it did.
In August of 2003, while John was running errands with Peter Robinson, Benji from Good Charlotte called from a nearby studio looking for an acoustic guitar. "We brought him one," says John. "And I just happened to have a bag of cds with me. I didn't actually think they'd listen to it." The very night Benji called from the road. "He was like, `holy shit, this is the coolest CD we've heard in a long time,'" says John. "`We're so excited, we want to talk to you more about this when we get back.'"
Then, this past September when Good Charlotte were in town for the MTV Video Music Awards, they called again. "Benji was like, `Hey what are you doing?'" says John. "You want to get sushi?'" Though there were industry people at the table, John spent the entire dinner talking to Benji and Joel. " They are both genuinely sincere, good people," he says. "and they knew all the lyrics to my songs, which I couldn't believe. " The next day Lola Ray finds themselves at Good Charlotte's VMA's after-party with Linkin Park, Beyonce, and Kelly Osbourne. "The whole scene was just unbelievable," says Brian.
One listen to I Don't Know You and you'll feel the same way and you'll understand why Benji and Joel signed Lola Ray to their new label DC Flag. From the chant-worthy opener "Plague," to the melodically-addictive (and autobiographical) "Our Brown Friends," to the ferocious urgency of "Automatic Girl," Lola Ray is one of the hottest young bands to bubble up from obscurity ince, well, Good Charlotte. And soon you too will be glad to say you do know "I Don't Know You".
